What is happening with exports and imports of goods in Moldova

In Moldova, in January-September 2023, exports of goods totaled 3014.9 million US dollars, which is 8.0% lower than in the corresponding period of 2022.

As announced by the National Bureau of Statistics, exports of domestic goods in January-September 2023 amounted to 2068.5 million US dollars (68.6% of total exports), down 10.2% compared to the same period in 2022.

At the same time, re-exports of foreign goods (after processing and classic) in January-September 2023 amounted to USD 946.4 million (31.4% of total exports), or 2.8% less compared to the same period in 2022.

Re-exports of goods after processing accounted for 13.9% of total exports, and conventional re-exports of goods, which have not undergone essential transformation – 17.5%.

According to official statistics, exports of goods to the European Union (EU-27) countries in January-September 2023 totalled USD 1925.9 million (0.8% less compared to the corresponding period in 2022), accounting for 63.9% of total exports.

At the same time, exports of goods to CIS countries in January-September 2023 were worth 720.6 million US dollars (0.9% less, compared to the same period in 2022), which is equivalent to a share of 23.9% in total exports.

In January-September 2023 imports of goods totalled USD 6411.0 million, which is 4.8% lower than in the same period in 2022.
At the same time, imports of goods from the European Union (EU-27) countries in January-September 2023 amounted to USD 3109.1 million (0.9% more than in the same period in 2022), accounting for 48.5% of total imports.

Imports of goods from CIS countries in January-September 2023 amounted to 1180.5 million USD (31.2% less than in the corresponding period of 2022), which equals a share of 18.4% in total imports.
The considerable gap between merchandise exports and imports resulted in the accumulation of a trade balance deficit in January-September 2023 of $3396.1 million or $61.8 million (-1.8%) less than in the same period in 2022.

In January-September 2023, the trade balance with the European Union (EU-27) countries ended with a deficit of USD 1183.2 million and with the CIS countries – USD 459.9 million, respectively USD 43.1 million (+3.8%) more and USD 527.7 million (-53.4%) less, compared to the values recorded in the same period in 2022.
